A reminder during this cold spell of Norfolk’s snowiest winter in living memory - 1947 - which saw deep snow on the ground from the middle of January. Food and fuel were still on the ration after the Second World War. ❄️Wintry days I was thrilled when artist Nigel Wallace said we could feature his fabulous print ‘Wells-next-the-Sea Winter Snow’ on the cover of our winter issue of North Norfolk Living, not least because it depicts one of my favourite views. But there were several other close contenders in Nigel’s winter print collection (which feel rather appropriate at the moment), including a snowy Burnham Market by moonlight, Blakeney and Holt. 🦀Wishing you a very Happy Christmas from all of us at North Norfolk Living. 🦀Loving the two crab pot Christmas trees on Wells quay (just managed to get them both in one pic), the illuminated Albatros and the twinkling real tree - thank you to everyone involved in making this lovely coastal display happen.

📍Talk of the town: Rachel Bowles visits Holt

📍Start your day @byfords_of_holt in the centre of this bustling Georgian town. Serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and takeaway food, you might return more than once!

📍Explore Little Hills and Spout Hills, near the town centre, with footpaths through woodland and open grassland; Spout Hills takes its name from its natural springs. Holt Country Park is a short drive and has waymarked routes, a visitor centre, toilets, picnic and play areas, and a tearoom.

📍Treat yourself @theowlholt, thought to be one of the oldest tearooms in Norfolk. Its counters are packed with delicious treats to takeaway or eat in.

📍Discover the wide selection of artisan cheese, provisions and wine @starplain_ . @bakersandlarnersofholt has just refurbished the delicatessen in its Food Hall, complete with an 18-metre counter filled with cheeses, meats and savoury treats.

📍Follow the owl trail to learn about Holt’s history. Pick up a leaflet at the library or navigate via the website on your phone. The owl is a mascot for Holt and appears in the town sign. Legend has it that some local men caught an owl and put it in the town pound, but it mysteriously flew away.

📍Peruse the many independent shops. Head say to @thereddotgallery for art and homewares, @beautybypaulwilkinscreative for products and gift sets and @nomadandthebowerbird for clothing and accessories.

📍Indulge in exquisite, handcrafted chocolates from @hunters_chocolates, which opened in June. Owner Gary Hunter is renowned for his work in the industry.

📍Wander around the town centre and enjoy the Christmas lights (until 6 Jan). The all-white fairy lights cascade from roof lines and window frames to give a picture-perfect winter wonderland scene.

📍Enjoy a meal @michaelsbistroholt in Franklyns Yard, with its menu of small and large plates, including seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes - plus a cocktail list, too. Cheers!

📍Stay over @chestnutcraftedhospitality’s Lawns Rooms. Next to the marketplace, it’s a fantastic base to explore Holt. Bring your dogs and children because they are more than welcome. 📷 @girlaroundnorthnorfolk

✨Let the festivi-teas begin! ✨A friend and I treated ourselves to the festive high tea at Byfords this week and absolutely loved it. It’s such a nice way to get together after some Christmas shopping in the run up to the big day. ✨We are real savoury fans and enjoyed the yummy sandwiches (and the complimentary sandwich top up, of course), cheese scones, black treacle pigs in blankets and more, though who are we kidding - the pretty, festive sweet treats were really good, too. Special mention (for us) goes to the gingerbread gateau opera cake and the tonka panna cotta melted snowman. Obviously, we left with doggy bags, and full of festive cheer (and goodies!), heading outside to admire the twinkling lights and festive bow on the door. ✨Need to know ✨
