Sarah Hardy reports on a selection of dog friendly holiday properties in Norfolk
Daneholme, Hunstanton
This is a lovely large house, suitable for multi-generational visits – and near the town centre, too. The Edwardian villa sleeps nine people in five bedrooms over two floors, has three bathrooms and plenty of original features including high ceilings and elegant fireplaces. There is a well-equipped kitchen and a separate dining room which is a great spot for celebratory meals. Not only is there a walled garden at the back and front, but the house also overlooks Lincoln Square park for extra dog walking opportunities. Up to two dogs are allowed.
Extra Be sure to walk the dogs along the cliffs and down to Old Hunstanton beach where they can have a good run and you can enjoy Old Town Beach Cafe where the breakfasts are highly recommended.
White Horses, Blakeney
This penthouse apartment, which sleeps just two, has a real touch of luxury. Think of a very cool and light interior scheme, with a terrific second floor master suite, complete with stylish en suite, of course. Add in a large kitchen diner, an extensive sitting room and great views over the marsh. There is also a private, fenced garden area, parking for two cars and you are right in the thick of things near the pretty village centre and quay. One dog is accepted.
Extra Sunday lunches at the Blakeney Manor Coastal Hotel & Inn are great and dogs are welcome in the bar and lounge areas, just not the restaurant.
Barleywood, South Creake
This is the spot for a touch of peace and tranquillity – if the dog allows it. The shepherd hut is designed for just two people and is not short on mod cons – there’s a king-sized bed, TV, shower room and very attractive kitchen – and all that quirkiness, too. Outside is a hot tub, chiminea and gas barbecue and lovely views across the fields. A rural retreat, indeed! There is high hedging on three sides of Barleywood – with secure fencing behind. One/two dogs are allowed.
Extra Creake Abbey is a great spot for a mooch around the shops and The Barn Cafe is lovely for coffee and cake. And you can walk to Burnham Thorpe, birthplace of Lord Nelson.
Brook Cottage, Kelling
This three-bedroom cottage, in Kelling village and part of the Kelling Estate, has been finished to a very high standard, with a large kitchen dining area and a lovely sitting room. The cottage sleeps six people, with one ground floor bedroom. It is within walking distance of Kelling beach and the coastal path and guests have use of two tennis courts, a pickleball court, and a play area, too. Two dogs are allowed.
Extra Holt Country Park is just a couple of miles away, with several waymarked paths. Hetty’s House Tea Rooms, right in the park, offers good bacon sarnies alongside hot drinks and cakes.
Where else?
East Ruston Cottages are all super dog friendly and many allow up to four animals. We like Jack’s Shack in Winterton, which sleeps up to four and is perfect for dogs who love to run on the beach!
Hall Farm, between Horning and Ludham, boasts nine dog friendly holiday cottages, all beautifully created out of old barns and milking parlours. We like the two-bedroom Kestrel Cottage with views to the River Ant.
