Talk of the town: Holt

Steeped in history and full of charm, Holt is a wonderful place to visit in the run up to Christmas. Spend a day with Rachel Bowles, exploring some of the highlights this Georgian town has to offer and soaking up its festive atmosphere
Start your day… at Byfords, situated in the centre of this bustling town, and enjoy coffee and pastries whilst you people watch from the kerb-side tables. Head inside and you’ll find a quirky layout with features reflecting the building’s history – exposed brick and flint walls, wooden beams and flagstone tiles giving cosy, rustic vibes. Thought to be one of the oldest buildings in the town with a cellar dating back to the 15th century, this was once an ironmongers and hardware store and survived the great fire of Holt in 1708. Now serving up breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, evening meals and takeaway food, you might be popping back here more than once!
Explore… the designated open spaces of Holt that are managed by Holt Town Council. Little Hills and Spout Hills are a stone’s throw from the town centre and incorporate several footpaths through woodland and open grassland. Spout Hills spans 14 acres and takes its name from the many natural springs that are found here.
A short drive from the town centre, meanwhile, you’ll find Holt Country Park, a Green Flag award winner managed by North Norfolk District Council, with clear waymarked routes through this 100-acre mixed woodland site. Facilities include a visitor centre, toilets, picnic and children’s play areas, in addition to Hetty’s House tea rooms to refuel after your walk. The paths here can become muddy after periods of rainfall so remember to take your wellies!
Treat yourself… to an abundance of homemade bread, pastries and cake options at the Owl Tea rooms; this quaint building overlooking the marketplace is thought to be one of the oldest tea rooms in Norfolk. The counters are packed full of delicious items for you to takeaway, or you can plan ahead with their click and collect service, including an option for a generous afternoon tea spread. Discover… the wide selection of artisan cheese, provisions and wine at Star Plain Stores. The philosophy of this little store is that food ingredients should be organic, non-processed and additive free. With its great quality items from the UK and Europe, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Bakers & Larners have just refurbished the delicatessen in their Food Hall, complete with an impressive new 18-metre counter filled with cheeses, meats and savoury treats. Both shops offer a hamper service, making them a good option for Christmas shopping.
Follow… the owl plaques to learn about the history of the town. Pick up a leaflet from the library or use your phone to navigate the 24 plaques through the website and read the information and interesting anecdotes along the route. The trail should take around 45 minutes to complete and is suitable for all ages. The owl is a significant mascot for Holt and is incorporated into the town sign. Legend has it that some local men caught an owl and placed it in the town pound, but it mysteriously flew away. Head to www.holtowltrail.co.uk for the trail route.
Peruse… the many independent stores for some unique Christmas gifts. Last year, Holt was included in Holly & Co’s roundup of seven of the best high streets in the UK as part of their small business campaign ‘Shop Independent Day’ and it’s easy to see why. Head, for instance, to The Red Dot Gallery for beautiful art and homewares, Beauty by Paul Wilkins Creative for a great selection of products and gift sets and recently opened Nomad & the bowerbird for stylish clothes and accessories.
Indulge… in exquisite, handcrafted chocolates from Hunters of Holt. Owner Gary Hunter is renowned for his work in the industry and even represented the UK as a judge at the World Chocolate Masters. The shop opened its doors in June, and inside you will find selection boxes with Hunters Chocolates that look like art pieces and combine the most delectable taste combinations. Their winter collection’s flavours include sloe gin, coconut and amaretto, gingerbread, and Baileys and espresso – take your time to savour them, they’re a real treat!
Wander… around the town centre between 15 November and 6 January and prepare to be in awe of the coordinated Christmas lights. The all-white fairy lights cascade down from the roof lines and window frames to give a picture-perfect winter wonderland scene. The bar is set high for window displays, too, with Bakers & Larners’ decorated shop front spanning several prominent buildings along the main high street, often with a story telling theme.
Enjoy… a meal at Michael’s Bistro, tucked in the corner of Franklyns Yard. This cosy restaurant recently opened, with chef Michael Carr and his partner, Charlotte Taylor, taking on their first business. This is a family- and dog-friendly space with a relaxed feel, serving good value food created with local ingredients. On the menu you will find a mixture of small and large plates which include seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes. Prepare to choose from classic options alongside seasonal specials, plus there’s a cocktail list, too. Head here for the Christmas cheer!
Stay for a little longer… and enjoy a night at the Lawns Rooms. Conveniently located just next to the marketplace, it’s a fantastic base to explore Holt. The Chestnut Group acquired the building in 2022 and have completed an extensive refurbishment complementing the property’s history; think country house style with wicker headboards, floral print textiles and calming pastel hues. The traditional interior is paired with modern fixtures and fittings and luxury comforts such as coffee machines. Bring your dogs and children along because they are more than welcome here.
